Chapter House boasts a rich history dating back to 1716 when it was originally built by Captain John Minot, a soldier and physician. During the Revolutionary War, the property served as a hospital, with Room 24 functioning as Dr. Minot's operating room. In 1730, the Josiah Ryder family added a Federal-style home next to the Minot House, contributing to the inn's historical significance.
Over the centuries, Chapter House has undergone numerous transformations. Captain Joseph Eldridge later acquired the property, merging it with adjacent buildings and expanding it to accommodate growing needs. In 1860, a house from Nantucket was added, and the structure was modernized with a mansard roof and portico. Notable owners have included U.S. Congressman Thomas Thatcher and historians Charles F. Swift and Ella Bray. Today, Chapter House stands as a beautifully preserved boutique hotel, offering a perfect blend of historical charm and modern luxury.
